http://www.johnnybregar.com/index.php Johnny B's Blog en johnnybregar@gmail.com Copyright 2011 2011-06-22T15:12:38+00:00 http://www.johnnybregar.com/index.php?/site/summer_reading_program_for_kcls/ http://www.johnnybregar.com/index.php?/site/summer_reading_program_for_kcls/#When:15:12:38Z Yesterday I played the first of my summer reading program shows for the King County Library System (Kingsgate Library).  What a fun time!  I have all of these shows listed on this site - click “Shows” and find one near you.  I’m playing them mostly solo so the kids are right up front and it’s VERY interactive.  My program is called “Music For All” and is an educational and entertaining (I’m a little biased here… ) look at music from a social/cultural point of view, but delivered in a way that the kids can really get.  For example - I have a big, colorful world map with me so I can show everyone where Australia is and play Waltzing Matilda - decrypting the song (translate: matilda, jumbuck, swagman, billy, etc.) so that everyone can understand what it means. I talked about where the Ukulele came from, the Louisianna Purchase, where Nuevo Leon is, and we take a trip down the Amazon River in my Blue Canoe.  It never ceases to amaze me how engaged, curious and creative the 3-6 year olds can be.  I get the greatest questions from them, like “Why are there dots on your guitar?”  And when I ask them a question, the hands fly up and the responses are always interesting and unique. Paper Airplane is a song about a boy who makes a paper airplane and throws it, hoping it will fly a hundred miles. It is “taken up by the breeze” and it flies out the window. The next thing we find out is that the plane has landed in a foreign country - France. As I was writing the song, I felt that I needed to do something different with this one. I wanted to tell more of a story and make kids use their imagination a bit. So I found Louise. She lives in Seattle with her family. Her father is French and her mother is American. I asked if she would be willing to read some text that I wrote in French and she was game. After a bit of grammar correction to the French text I provided, we recorded Louise reading it at her house. The english translation is approximately this: “Dear Johnny, I am writing to you today because I believe I have found your paper airplane. My name is Louise and I live in Saint-Malo, a small town in France. This morning, when I woke up I looked out my window and saw a paper airplane in my yard. Since your name was written on the side, I sent it back to you!” In order to transition in and out of the reading, I added some accordian music in the background and then to make it a little more cohesive, I also put some accordian at the beginning of the song - very quietly. I tried to make it as “French provincial” as I possibly could, which adds a musical context for the change in language.
